Sample Letter to The Province newspaper:On Oct. 25th, I attended an open house on the South Fraser Perimeter Road held at the North Delta Rec. Center. A well-prepared contingent of subject matter experts offered the results of their findings as consultants on the project. I would truly love to take solace in the warm fuzzy comfort of their conclusions, except that the entire process is linked to proponents of the highway. My last ten years prior to retirement were filled with surveys and consultants and amazingly, they always told my employer what he wished to hear. When I said this to one of the groups organizers he assured me that they were all professionals who would not risk sullying their reputations by distorting the truth. My reply was that every day the courts are full of experts and consultants, all presumed to be honorable, brought in by the defense and the prosecution, presenting diametrically opposed arguments and opinions on the same piece of evidence - expertise hired to support their employers position. Is there anyone left out there that is fooled by this sort of facade? On Oct. 26th The Sun ran a large article documenting the immediate physical damage to be done by this road. It would appear that there is almost nothing belonging to the citizens of the Lower Mainland, our tax money, our environment, our quality of life, that the Provincial Government is not willing to sacrifice to provide a free highway to aid Asian business profit in North America. Yet when those same citizens ask for help to get to work or school, they're told it must be "use pay". Given the well-documented air quality problems in the Lower Mainland it is no less intolerable for a politician to support the increased use of truck transportation than it is for an industrialist to allow toxins to enter our groundwater. Both should be held criminally liable for their actions in endangering the health and welfare of the citizens of the region. In fact, the politician even more so as their primary function is supposed to be to serve and protect the general public, not to pander to the special interests of offshore shipping companies and distant "Big-Big-Box" stores.
